RETURN TO DENMARK - CWC Weekend 2025 (Part Two)

On Saturday 17th October 2025 the Cold War Commanders gathered at The Unit Wargames in Stone, Staffordshire for one of the big weekend games. This years theme was Denmark with NATO represented by Danish troops supported by West German, British and US forces defending against a large Warsaw Pact push north up the Jutland Peninsula with a simultaneous Naval and VDV assault on the Island of Fyn to secure the eastern flank of the advance. 

Originally we had 14 players due to attend but unfortunately we lost one player due to a health scare on the Friday evening resulting in a long wait at A&E. Thankfully everything was ok and the player is already planning forces for next years games! So with 13 players a quick reshuffle resulted in 6 NATO players against 7 WP players.

There were two tables, one large 16' x 6' table (5 NATO Players vs 5 WP Players) that represented the E20 running across Denmark that NATO were using as a stop line to try and hold back the WP advance and one 8' x 6' (1 NATO Player vs 2 WP Players) representing the Island of Fyn. 

On the eastern edge of the 16' x 6' table was a small section of bridge which corresponded with a similar small section of bridge on the western edge of the 8' x 6' table. This represented the bridge that links Jutland to Fyn around Middlefart. There were various bits of terrain to represent features that would have been found in Denmark but not necessarily in the correct geographic location.

A NATO Hawk Battery which was one of the objectives for the WP forces on Fyn. 

Also I had placed in various places on both tables field boundaries that consisted of large piles of rocks that exist throughout Denmark. These would block LoS and allow units against them to claim hard cover. Although on the down side they were impassable to vehicles. I'll provide more information on these in a separate post.

So while players made a brew and began deploying their forces I delivered the initial briefings and indicated the NATO and WP objectives. NATO's main objective was to try and hold the WP advance and stop them from cutting the E20 as this was a major route from the west coast of Jutland to bring further USMC reinforcements into the area. For WP players they were each allocated specific objectives which included taking the airport, cutting the E20 highway and securing the western end of the bridge and also the town of Kolding. On the Island of Fyn NATO were tasked with holding the eastern end of the bridge and if possible hold onto the HAWK battery to prevent Russian Heavy Bombers to support the offensive. WP had been tasked with securing thr HAWK battery and taking Odense and the bridge approaches.

RETURN TO DENMARK - CWC Weekend 2025 (Part One)

OK activity has been very slow on this blog for various reasons, real life, health problems plus the inability to access this blog for a while due to problems with Microsoft Bing not allowing access to Google Chrome stuff. I've finally sorted it out so over the coming months I'll be posting information and progress on preparations for our annual CWC Weekend get together later in the year.

This years event takes place over the weekend of 18/19 October at The Unit in Stone, Staffordshire and will involve between 12 and 16 players battling it out for control of the Jutland Peninsula in the mid 1980's. Forces include Danish and West Germans reinforced by UK and USMC vs Soviet and East German Divisions reinforced by Naval and VDV troops.

Over the years we have built up a considerable collection of forces and terrain but each year I try and add to the terrain collection. This year there will be a few bits of new stuff on the workbench. First up is a Hawk Missile battery that will be more of an objective rather than a weapon system (but you never know 😉).
